Prohibition of Jealousy and
Malevolence by Holy Quran and Hadiths:
- Allah (God) has said in Holy
Quran: "And covet not that whereby Allah has made one of you excel over the
other." (Part 5, Chapter 4 An-Nisa, Verse
32)(Translation in English from: Kunz-ul-Iman) As explanation of this
verse, in "Tafseer-Khaza-inal-Irfan", it is mentioned that to desire for
worldly things or religious status (due to knowledge) both are forbidden so
that no jealousy or malevolence arouse. Jealousy is very bad characteristic of
human character. When a person with this trait sees a fellow being in comfort
and good condition, then desires that the other fellow be deprived of that and
he acquire the comforts. This is forbidden. A person should be contended with
the will (taqdir) and allocation (favors on people). It is the mysterious
philosophy of Allah to make one excel over the other by giving wealth to some
people or religious status (leadership based on knowledge of Islam, one
Possesses).
- The Holy companion (Sahabi) of
Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him), Abu Hureara (May
Allah be please with him) reported that Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace
and peace be upon Him) said: (meaning of which is) "Restrain form suspicion
(distrust) because suspicion is the utmost lie and don't seek shortcomings and
weaknesses of others and don't espionage and don't be jealous of others and
don't be malevolent and Oh the people (slave) of Allah! Be like brothers."
(From the book of Hadith: Sahih Bukhari &
Sahih Muslim)
- The Holy companion (Sahabi) of
Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him), Hazrat Ans (May
Allah be please with him) reported that Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace
and peace be upon Him) said: (meaning of which is) "Don't break of
relationships, don't offend one another, don't keep animosities, and don't be
jealous and Oh the people (slave) of Allah! Be like brothers." (From the book of Hadith: Tirmazi)
- The Holy companion (Sahabi) of
Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him), Abdullah son of
Basre (May Allah be please with him) reported that Holy Prophet Muhammad
(Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him) said: (meaning of which is) "Jealousy,
tell tale and astrlogy activities like fortune telling and horoscope are not
my way (of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him))."
(From the book of Hadith: Tibrani)
After the discussion of
defnition of jealousy and malevolence, their shariah orders (principles of
Islam) and its prohibition in Hoy Quran and Holy Hadiths (Injunctions of Holy
Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him)), it is also essential to
acquaint with the hidden evil, misery and calamity of jealousy.
Misery and calamity of
jealousy and malevolence:
Good deeds ruined:
- The Holy companion (Sahabi) of
Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him), Abu Hureara (May
Allah be please with him) reported that Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace
and peace be upon Him) said (meaning of which is): “Abstain from jealousy as
it eats away good deeds as a fire eats up wood”.
- In a long Hadith (Injunction
of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him)) it has been
reported that Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him) said
(meaning of which is): “Angels present the deeds of a person to Allah (God)
(remember that Allah knows everything). These deeds are bright like sun and
decorated like a bride and include Haj and Umrah (Holy pilgrimages at
different periods of year to Macca (Saudi Arabia) and Jihad (Holy War) and
other good deeds. When these good deeds reach fifth heaven (taken by angels),
the guard angel of that heaven says: "Throw these good deeds back on the face
of the doer because he was jealous of the favors of Allah conferred over
others. He is discontented with the distribution of Allah and Allah has
ordered to disallow the deeds of jealous to rise above this heaven." (from the book: Minhaj-ul-Abeddin)
Impairment of
faith:
- The Holy companion (Sahabi) of
Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him), Maaviya son of
Hayda (May Allah be please with him) reported that Holy Prophet Muhammad
(Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him) said (meaning of which is): “Jealousy
mutilates the faith same as aloes ruins honey”. (Aloe is a kind of medicinal
plant, the juice of which is extremely bitter so it also makes honey
unpalatable) (From the book
Masnad_ul-Firdoos).
- The Holy companion (Sahabi) of
Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him), Fudail son of
Aayaz (May Allah be please with him) told that once he went to one of his
students who was nearly to die. He sat beside his head and started reciting
"Surah Yaseen"(Chapter 36 of Holy Quran). The student asked to stop the
recitation of Holy Quran. He stopped the recitation and started instruction of
"Kalma Taiba" (The Muslim/Islam's confession of faith which is "There is no
God except Allah, Muhummed is the apostle of Allah") to the student. The
student replied: "I'll not utter the "Kalma" and I renounce it". With these as
his last word the student died. (Note: Generally, when the last words of a
Muslim are of infidelity he is not declared an infidel. As mentioned in the
book "Durmukhtar" that saying such words may be due to the hardship of death
and may have been said due to unconsciousness). Hazrat Fudail (May Allah be
please with him) felt very sad (although there was a chance of the case as
mentioned in the earlier parenthesis but at the time of death when the last
words are not good then it appears inappropriate and bad, and thus he felt
worried) and thus restricted himself to his house. Almost for forty days he
kept on crying. After forty days he saw his student in dream in a condition
that he was being pushed to hell. Hazrat Fudail (May Allah be please with him)
asked him: "Why was faith forfeited from you although you were among my most
capable and learned student". The student replied: "The reason were three
deficiencies. First I used to tell tale, I told my friends something and told
something different to you (so that mischief was created). Second I was
jealous of my fellows. And third I had a disease and the physician had advised
me to drink a glass of wine (Alcohol) at least once a year. As per physician's
I used to drink a glass of wine every year". (Note that alcohol like wine,
bear, whiskey, champagne etc are forbidden i.e. Haram in Islam). (From the book: Minhaj-ul-Abeddin)
Admission to hell:
- The Holy companion (Sahabi) of
Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace and peace be upon Him), Abu Hureara (May
Allah be please with him) reported that Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s grace
and peace be upon Him) said (meaning of which is): “at the day of judgement
(the day when all the humans will be given back life by Allah and then
questioned for their doings in the world) six kinds of persons will be
admitted to hell with out reckon of their deeds (good vs. bad) due to six
reasons: Arab due to dividing into factions, rulers due to cruelty, dominants
due to arrogance, traders due to dishonesty, villagers due to illiteracy and
learned man due to jealousy.(Thus we can also conclude that acquiring the
knowledge of religion is not enough to be forgiven at the judgement day but
also abstaining from sins and good deeds are required). (From the book: Kunz-ul-Aamal)
Termination of
life:
Sometimes jealousy leads to the termination of life as eminent in the following
tale, told by Hazrat Bakr bin Abdullah:
A man was beloved courtier of a king. Daily, he used to stand in front of
the king and advised: "give kind returns to kind person and don't behave badly
with a bad person because his own badness is enough for him". The king liked him
very much because of his advises. Another courtier became jealous of him and
wanted to ruin his respect. So once the courtier lied to the king. He said to
the king that his beloved courtier remarks to public that "the mouth of king
stinks". The king asked for the justification. The man replied: "call him near
to you and he'll keep his hand on his nose.
The next day, jealous courtier took the beloved courtier to his house and
offered curry rich in garlic to eat. After the meal the beloved courtier reached
the royal hall of audience and advised to the king as usual: "give kind returns
to kind person and don't behave badly with a bad person because his own badness
is enough for him". The king asked him to come near. The courtier kept his hand
on his mouth, thinking that the smell of his mouth (due to garlic) will cause
inconvenience for the king. But the king believed that the other courtier was
right.
The king himself wrote a letter of order for his superintendent (of treasury)
'to decapitate and send the body stuffed with chaff to him' of the person who
brings the letter. It was the king's habit that he wrote letters himself only
when he wanted to award prizes to someone. But his time exceptionally he wrote
letter for punishment. When the beloved courtier came out of the palace, the
jealous courtier asked him about the letter and the beloved courtier told him
that the king wrote himself the letter to the treasurer. The jealous courtier,
thinking the letter to be of prize, asked him to give the letter to him. The
beloved courtier gave the letter to the jealous one as an act of generosity.
The jealous courtier reached the treasurer and asked for the prizes as per the
order. When the treasurer read the order to the jealous courtier, the courtier
tried to explain to him that the letter was not meant for him and the king can
confirm this fact. The treasurer said that there is never flexibility in the
order of the king and thus he proceeded with the order and killed the
courtier.
The next day, the beloved courtier reached the court and advised the king as
usual. The surprised king asked about the order. He replied that another
courtier had taken it from me. The king said that, that courtier told me, you
say to public that my mouth stinks. The beloved courtier denied that he had
never stated such comments. When the king asked him the reason for covering his
nose, the courtier explained that the courtier had invited for a curry rich in
garlic and so I covered my mouth to prevent you from the odor of my nose.
The king understood the whole situation and asked the beloved courtier to add
this with his advice: "for the misery of a person his own badness is enough for
him like the instance of this jealous". (From the
book: Ahia-ul-Uloom)
